GLP-1 Weight Loss Treatment & Cancer Risk: What New Research Shows | MyGP Clinics
Can GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medicines Lower the Risk of Obesity-Related Cancer?
New research suggests that GLP-1 medicines used for weight management may have health benefits beyond weight loss — but more research is still needed.
GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have become increasingly well known for their role in weight management and diabetes treatment.
Now, a large study involving researchers from National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) and international collaborators has found an interesting association: adults with obesity but without diabetes who received GLP-1 treatment had a lower incidence of several cancers linked to excess body weight.
What Did the Study Find?
Researchers analysed health records from more than 229,000 adults with obesity and without diabetes in the United States.
After matching patients with similar characteristics, approximately 161,800 individuals were compared.
One group received GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment, while the comparison group received lifestyle counselling involving diet and exercise.
During approximately two years of follow-up, researchers found that people receiving GLP-1 treatment had a:
41% lower relative risk of developing obesity-associated cancers
compared with those receiving lifestyle counselling alone.
The cancers studied included several cancers known to be associated with obesity, such as:
-
Colorectal cancer
-
Endometrial cancer
-
Breast cancer
-
Kidney cancer
-
Pancreatic cancer
-
Liver and gallbladder cancer
-
Ovarian cancer
-
Thyroid cancer
-
Gastric and oesophageal cancers
-
Multiple myeloma
-
Meningioma
Researchers also observed reductions across several patient groups and with different GLP-1 medicines.
Why Is Weight Important for Cancer Risk?
Obesity is more than a cosmetic concern.
Excess body fat may contribute to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance and changes in hormone levels. These biological changes are believed to play a role in the development of several types of cancer.
Maintaining a healthy weight therefore remains an important part of long-term health and disease prevention.
Does This Mean GLP-1 Medicines Prevent Cancer?
Not yet.
This is an important distinction.
The study found an association between GLP-1 treatment and lower cancer incidence, but it was not a randomised clinical trial designed to prove that the medicines themselves prevented cancer.
The average follow-up period was also only around two years.
Longer-term and prospective studies will be needed before GLP-1 medicines can be recommended specifically for cancer prevention.
For now, these medications should continue to be prescribed based on appropriate medical indications such as weight management or diabetes treatment after assessment by a doctor.
Weight Management Is About More Than the Number on the Scale
Healthy weight management can have benefits that extend beyond appearance.
For suitable individuals, reducing excess body weight may help improve:
-
Blood pressure
-
Blood sugar control
-
Cholesterol levels
-
Fatty liver disease
-
Sleep and mobility
-
Cardiovascular risk
-
Overall metabolic health
Emerging research is now exploring whether effective obesity treatment may also influence long-term cancer risk.
Considering Medical Weight Management?
Weight-loss medication is not suitable for everyone.
Before starting treatment, a doctor should assess your:
-
BMI and waist circumference
-
Medical history
-
Current medications
-
Blood pressure
-
Blood glucose or HbA1c
-
Cholesterol levels
-
Liver and kidney health
-
Personal risk factors and treatment goals
Treatment should also be combined with appropriate nutrition, physical activity and ongoing medical follow-up.

Medical assessment is required before any prescription medication is started.
Key Takeaway
A major 2026 study found that GLP-1 receptor agonist use among adults with obesity but without diabetes was associated with a 41% lower incidence of obesity-related cancers compared with lifestyle counselling alone.
The findings are encouraging, but they do not yet prove that GLP-1 medicines prevent cancer.
Maintaining a healthy weight, undergoing appropriate health screening and discussing individual risk factors with your doctor remain important parts of preventive healthcare.
