A sebaceous cyst, more commonly a type of epidermoid skin cyst, is a slow-growing lump that forms beneath the skin. It often appears on the face, neck, back, chest or scalp and may contain keratin material.

Most cysts are harmless, but they can gradually enlarge or become painful, red, swollen, infected or repeatedly inflamed. Some may also be bothersome because of their size, location or appearance.

What to Expect

For suitable cases, cyst removal is usually performed as a minor procedure under local anaesthesia. A small incision is made to carefully remove the cyst and, where possible, its capsule. The wound may then be closed with stitches depending on its size and location.

If the cyst is actively infected or severely inflamed, the doctor may recommend treating the infection or draining the cyst first before arranging definitive removal.

All removed tissue may be sent for laboratory examination when medically indicated.

对于合适的患者，囊肿切除通常可在局部麻醉下进行小型手术。医生会通过小切口，小心将囊肿及囊壁取出，并根据伤口大小及位置决定是否需要缝合。

如果囊肿正处于明显发炎或感染阶段，医生可能会先处理感染或进行引流，待炎症改善后再安排完整切除。

如有医学需要，取出的组织也可能送往实验室作进一步检查。
