Nail Haematoma Treatment
Nail Haematoma Treatment
A nail haematoma, also known as a subungual haematoma, occurs when blood collects underneath a fingernail or toenail, usually after an injury. It may cause throbbing pain, swelling, tenderness, and dark red, purple, or black discolouration beneath the nail.
At MyGP Clinic, our doctors can assess the injured nail and check for damage to the nail bed or an underlying fracture. If the blood collection is recent and painful, a small opening may be made in the nail to drain the trapped blood and relieve pressure. In more severe cases, partial or complete nail removal, wound care, or further imaging may be recommended.
Avoid attempting to pierce or drain the nail at home, as this may cause infection or further injury. Seek prompt medical attention if there is severe pain, significant swelling, an open wound, numbness, or difficulty moving the affected finger or toe.
MyGP Clinic
